When Cormier described teen years, he would say:

He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts.
  • He says,
  •    “I was a skinny kid living in a ghetto-type neighborhood wanting the world to know that I existed.”


  • So…how did he start his writing career?

It all started in 7th grade
  • He began to write down his feelings.
  • One teacher by the name of Sister Catherine, read one of his poems and declared him a writer.
  • From that day on, he was a writer.
  • He started by working as a newspaper reporter and writing his own stories at night.

  • This book launched his success as a Young Adult author.

Would he start with character, setting, or plot when writing his stories?
  • He said that he always started with character of course.
  • He would have to “hear” the voice of the character before he could begin.
  • WHO WAS HIS FAVORITE CHARACTER FROM ALL OF THE NOVELS THAT HE WROTE????


  • He would tell you, “ They are all my children!”


  • Then he would say that Archie Costello in The Chocolate War, would have to be his favorite.

What advice would you give to young aspiring writers?
  • HE WOULD REPLY…
  • Read, read, read…
  • Write, write, write…
  • “It is important to write regularly and read often!”

  • “A lot of books don’t get written simply because talented people never sit down and actually write.”
