APA

 

1.      Margins are 1 inch on all sides of the paper.

2.      Appropriate font size is 12.

3.      Acceptable fonts include Arial and Times Roman.

4.      Either italics or underlining may be used in the citation process, but not both in the same paper.

5.      Place no number on the title page, It is not counted in the document. 

6.      No page numbers on the outline page or the first page of the manuscript.  Begin typing page numbers on page two.  The number should appear in the upper right hand corner or lower right hand corner.

7.      All material within the body of the paper is double spaced.

8.      Do not begin a paragraph o the last line of a page.

9.      The preferred writing style is Standard English.  This avoids first and second person pronouns, colloquialisms, contractions, slang, and jargon. 

10.  The words represented by initials must be written out the first time that they appear in the document.  Initials may then be used for any subsequent reference.  Example: California Test of Basic Skills (CTBS).

11.  Use figures to express the quantities 10 and above, and use words to express quantities one through nine.  If a number starts a sentence, express it in words. 

Example:    There were seven items on the test.

                  There were 25 students in the class.

                  Thirty-seven students attended the field trip. 

12.  If it is necessary to group a number of 10 or greater with a lesser number, use figures for all numbers.

13.  Numbers that express statistical or mathematical functions are written as figures.

Example: 5% of the population; the 1st quartile; 0.33 of the….

14.  Common fractions are expressed in words. E.g. two-thirds

15.  Dates and monetary units are written as figures. 

16.  Use the symbol for percent (%) only when it is preceded by a number. Use the word percentage when a number is not given.

Example:  25% of the class…

                  A high percentage of students….

17.  Within the body of the document, capitalize titles of books, journals, and published tests.
